Merry Christmas!

Posted on December 25, 2011

I find that Christmas has sort of snuck up on me this year. We never got around to putting the lights up outside and I didn’t bake the piles of cookies and pies that I had planned. But in a way, it was nice keeping things simpler. I’ve really enjoyed this Christmas season, and I hope you have too. May today be a day filled with joy, peace, thankfulness, and wonderful memories for you and your family. I’m so thankful for each of you who are a part of my life, and who make it wonderful.

Merry Christmas!

P.S. This is another shot we got of sweet Mary Jo during her newborn session. Christmas gifts don’t get any better than this!

Close of Summer

Posted on August 23, 2011

Yesterday, was the first day of school. Not only did we drop off our second grader, but our kindergartner, too. My baby. The kids were thrilled about the start of the new year and they did so great! After we dropped the kids off, Aaron and I walked back home alone and tried not to talk about how this was the end of an era or how quiet the house was going to be when we got home. Luckily, we had plans to meet our good friends for a “Boo-Hoo Breakfast” after we all dropped our kids off. It was great fun and a great distraction. After that, as Aaron and I drove around, then we had the sentimental talks about how not so very long ago, Abby and Carson were just babies, and so on and so forth. We smiled and laughed (and were tempted to cry), and spent a great day together shopping and going to a quiet lunch. It was really nice. But when 2:30 rolled around, we were just dying to pick the kids up and hear all about their day. It was so fun seeing their smiling faces when they walked outside! We talked and talked the whole walk home, then filled out the giant pile of paperwork, and had reading time, and started to get back into the swing of things for the school year.

Today was my first day at home without any kids or Aaron to keep me company. It’s strangely quiet, but at the same time, I’m excited about all the extra time I’ll have to pour into my business. I’ve got so many ideas that have been flying through my head (some since my kids were just babies) and I can’t wait to begin putting legs on some of these dreams.

Looking forward to this new era!

Notes

Posted on April 19, 2011

When I was a kid/teen, I was all about writing notes in school with my BFF’s. Whether we were talking about what we were going to do on the weekend or about our latest crushes, it was a thrill to get a note, and my pockets seemed to be ever full of the things.

Tonight as we were tucking the kids in and tidying things up, I picked up Abby’s shorts to take them to the laundry room. As I tucked them underneath my arm, I felt something in her pocket. Lo and behold, it was a stack of folded up little notes. I have to admit, I felt a little sneaky as I pulled them out and began to unfold them (Aaron peeking over my shoulder). What first grade “secrets” would I discover? Were these the first of many notes that I’m sure will be passed between Abby and her friends?

As I opened them, one by one, I couldn’t help but feel a little emotional…
Notes from my daughter

One after the other, I read, “I love Mom and Dad.”

(This is the part where I get a little weepy.)

Truly… I feel so blessed. I have the best kids. Tonight I was just reminded of the importance of taking hold of every moment and enjoying every season. Thank you, God, for my precious family and all that you have done for us.

New Arrival

Posted on February 4, 2011

This week was a great week! In addition to the snow, I got to meet my brand new niece, Madison. She is beautiful and awesome! My sis-in-law, Natalie, had to have a C-section, and I had the privilege of being there when she got to hold Madison for the first time. Very cool moment.

Just Because

As a college student, I’d hop in the car of a Saturday morning with my camera in tow, and I would just drive. I’d take backroads and stop anywhere that looked interesting. I’d take all day to shoot a roll or two of black and white film. It was fun, and in doing that, I fell more and more in love with photography. The years passed and I got married, had kids, and started the business of photography — which I love love love — but stopped taking the time to shoot solely for me and to experiment with my camera.

The other day I was spending time with my AWESOME mother-in-law, who is a remarkable fine art photographer. She and another photographer friend who was visiting from New York were going to go out and take pictures and they invited me to come along! So today, we spent a couple hours driving around the Hill Country taking pictures of whatever we happened to come across, talking photography all day long. It was so nice, and the time just flew by. I don’t know that I got any earth shattering photos, but it was just nice being out there.

Vacation

Posted on August 3, 2010

Walk in the WoodsWell, I’m finally back from vacation. It was wonderful! I had the wonderful opportunity to see some amazing places, spend time with family, relax and more, and I feel so lucky to have had that chance.

The first week away, my mom and I (with the kids in tow) took a road trip up to the Memphis area for a family reunion. My great grandmother grew up in Mississippi and is one of 12. It was fun listening to her and her sister tell stories of when they were younger, and I think it’s so cool that my kids have the chance to hang out with their great-great grandmother. After the reunion, I spent a few days with my mom and dad. It was really nice being “back home” for a while. Next was Jacob and Jill’s wedding (pictures to come soon), and then Aaron, the kids, and I left for our family vacation. We spent a week on the road and had SO MUCH FUN! We canoed on Caddo Lake, built sandcastles on the beach in Galveston, saw dolphins in the harbor, and so much more.

And now we’re back, and I’m excited to be jumping into everything again! I’ll have some weddings and portraits to post for you soon.

Have a great week!

Baby Andre

Posted on March 31, 2010

I don’t put personal stuff on here much, but I wanted to share the newest member of our family. This is my adorable new nephew, Andre. Isn’t he precious?! I was so thrilled when my sister called me last week to tell me that she was headed to the hospital. The kids and I packed up and went to meet him. Even though I’m not that far removed from having babies of my own, I was just amazed at how tiny and sweet and precious newborns are. Love it! Here are a few images. I’m hoping to go back and get some newborn portraits of him.

Being Inspired

Posted on December 16, 2009

PHS-1506It’s a cold and cloudy day, and I absolutely love it. Days like this were made for Christmas shopping, reading, snuggling, and watching movies. This morning I was out and about running errands and whatnot, when the bookstore just drew me in. Now, there are two things in a bookstore that I find almost completely irresistible — magazines and journals. Not sure what it is about periodicals that has a hold on me but I just LOVE magazines. Fashion, cooking, home decor, wedding, photography, outdoors… it matters little what the subject matter is, I could read them all day. Journals have always been a weakness of mine. There’s something about the blank canvas, a clean slate… the possibilities. It gets me excited.

Needless to say, I left with a pile of magazines and a new journal. I’m feeling inspired.

What inspires you?

Also, I should’ve posted this ages ago, but congratulations to Natalie, who won a Starbucks gift card in the Thankfulness Challenge a couple weeks ago. She is constantly inspiring me. Thanks, Natalie!
